Claiming made easy

This page explains how health insurance claiming works- what’s included, what happens next and where to find information for Extras, Hospital and ambulance claims.

3 easy ways to claim on Extras

1

At your provider

On the spot, where available.

  • Swipe your physical or digital ahm card (including Apple Wallet or Google Wallet) at the HICAPS machine during your appointment if your provider offers HICAPS.
  • Your benefit comes off the bill instantly- you just pay the gap.

2

Log in, upload and done

  • Log in to the ahm app or your online account.
  • Go to Make a claim, pick your service and start claim
  • Type in the providers number or surname and select from the dropdown list.
  • List the items you received and cost. If there is more than one person on the policy, select the individual who had the service
  • Attach your receipt and hit submit.

Your claims summary shows the list of items in your claim, the total charge of the service (total paid), as well as an estimate of the benefits you may get back.

We’ll send your benefit to your bank in 2-5 business days (timing can differ slightly between banks).

Prefer paper?

  • Download a claim form and collect your receipts.
  • Then either pop it in the post or upload a copy of your completed form and receipts online via the Upload Documents page and select ‘Claims’.
  • Claims sent via post (and medical or hospital claims) can take a little longer to process. So, allow around 6-8 weeks for Medicare two-way claims.
  • Paper claims for Extras services are generally processed sooner depending on the type of service and information provided.

Note: Any benefit you receive will depend on your level of cover, annual limits and waiting periods. If you’ve reached the limit for that service, you may need to pay the full amount.

Claiming for Hospital treatment

If you have Hospital cover with ahm, we may help with bills for things like doctor’s fees, accommodation, operating theatre fees and intensive care when you’re admitted to hospital as a private patient. What’s included depends on the level of Hospital cover you have -generally, higher levels include more services.

When you may need to submit a Hospital claim

If you submit a hospital claim through Medicare using a Medicare claim form and a Two-way claim form, Medicare will process the claim and forward the details to ahm, and you won’t need to submit anything further.

If you’ve received a Medicare Statement of Benefits, you can submit this to ahm through the ahm app, your online member account, or by post.

Understanding Hospital costs

Hospital benefits don’t work the same way as Extras, and there isn’t a single calculator to show how much you’ll get back.

Any benefits payable depend on your Hospital inclusions, exclusions, excess and waiting periods, as well as whether Medicare pays a benefit for the treatment.

You can read more about how Hospital cover works.

Ambulance claims

ahm may pay benefits for ambulance services if they’re included on your cover and the service meets the requirements under your policy. This includes ambulance cover on all Hospital covers, Extras covers and packaged products, however the type of ambulance service included varies between products.

Ambulance benefits don’t generally apply to non-emergency transport or transfers that aren’t medically necessary. Depending on where you live, state ambulance schemes may also apply.

How to claim

If you get an ambulance invoice, upload it via the ahm app or online and we’ll assess your claim based on your level of cover.
