How to protect yourself

• Check the platform: how have you been contacted? We’ll only get in touch via phone, SMS, email or post. For external apps, we’ll only send you messages from our official accounts if you contact us on those platforms first. If you’re concerned about a message, you can get in touch with us directly.
• Check the sender's ID: is the sender's name “From ahm” or just “ahm”? There’s a difference – we don’t use “From” as a first name. If you’re ever unsure about a number, get in touch with us directly.
• Check the spelling and grammar: notice poor grammar or typos? Genuine communications from us will have correct spelling, grammar, and formatting.
• Check the message content: are there unsolicited links, photos, or files? What is the message about? Scammers can embed malware(opens in a new tab) (malicious software) in attachments, which can be downloaded onto your device as soon as you open them. Our messages will always be about your relationship with us. This can include your health insurance policy, other types of insurance, claims, account matters, health-related services, or ahm partner offers.
• Check the tone of the message: is it threatening? Is there a sense of urgency? Or are you being offered something that seems too good to be true? We'll never contact you to demand money, ask for the password for your ahm account, your sensitive information, or call you outside our business hours unless we’ve set this up with you. (If you have previously placed a security question or PIN on your ahm account, we’ll use this to confirm your identity every time you contact us.)

• Check the sender: what’s the sender's email address? We’ll never use email addresses with outsourced domain names like Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook. If you’re concerned, check the contact information against our previous communications or get in touch.
• Check the spelling and grammar: notice poor grammar or typos? Genuine communications from us will have correct spelling, grammar, and formatting. 
• Check the content: what is the email about? Our messages will always be about your relationship with us. This can include your health insurance policy, other types of insurance, claims, account matters, health-related services, or ahm partner offers. Scammers are great at copying things like official logos and titles. If you’re concerned about the email, log into your ahm account to check your profile or get in touch.
• Check the tone of the message: we’ll never pressure you to act quickly, threaten you, or offer you something that seems too good to be true. We'll never contact you to demand money, ask for the password for your ahm account or your sensitive information. If you get any suspicious emails claiming to be from us, report them to Scamwatch(opens in a new tab).

Don't click on a link in a message or email straight away. If it's about your cover, log in to your ahm account to check your profile, or get in touch if you’re concerned.

Some scams allege that there’s an issue with your account, like a missed payment. Scammers create urgency to trick you into sharing your personal information. If you're unsure about a message, get in touch with us.

Phishing scams can come in many forms – phone calls, letters, texts, or emails. Scammers can use sophisticated technology to pose as legitimate companies and organisations, like ahm, Medibank and even the government. They may ask you for personal information, like your password or credit card number.

Here are a few ways to manage your settings in the ahm app or via your ahm account:

• Only log in to your account from a secure internet connection. Avoid logging in to your account from public computers or devices, or while using public Wi-Fi. If you’re using your ahm account, make sure the URL is members.ahm.com.au.
• Make sure your details are up to date and accurate.
• Regularly review your account activity. If you see anything unusual, get in touch.
• Review your communication preferences to manage how we contact you.
• Update your password regularly. Use a strong, unique password or passphrase. Log in to change your ahm password.
