Pharmacy claims and health insurance

If you have pharmacy on your cover, you may be able to use your health insurance to claim benefits towards pharmacy items that aren’t subsidised by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), as long as the items are prescribed by a medical practitioner, approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and are prescription only.

Please note all relevant Pharmacy waiting periods must be served before you can claim.

Do I have pharmacy on my cover?

Some of our extras products include pharmacy under extras. To find eligible cover, you can check out the inclusions of our extras products on our website. Or, when searching for cover, tick the ‘pharmacy’ inclusions box to see products with pharmacy built in.

If you’re already a customer just check out your product guide to see if pharmacy is included on your cover.

What medications can I claim?

If your extras cover includes pharmacy, we’ll pay a benefit (up to your annual limit) per eligible item towards non-PBS pharmacy items that:

  • Cost above the PBS co-payment amount,
  • Are approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for sale within Australia,
  • Are prescribed by a medical practitioner,
  • Are essential to treat a particular illness injury or condition, and
  • Are prescription only.

Certain medications like oral contraceptives and cosmetic pharmaceuticals require additional criteria, which are outlined in the Pharmacy FAQs below.

What is the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)?

The government helps to make some prescription medications more affordable by listing them on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and paying for part of them.
The PBS sets the remaining amount that a patient pays towards the cost of subsidised drugs. This is called a co-payment. Private health insurers can’t pay any benefits towards any medications subsidised by the PBS.

What are non-PBS pharmaceuticals?

Non-PBS pharmaceuticals are medications or prescriptions which are not listed on the PBS, which means their purchase is not subsided by the Commonwealth Government. ahm will pay benefits towards eligible non-PBS pharmaceutical items that meet the criteria outlined above.
