What is pay as you drive insurance?

It’s the straight up, no-fuss car insurance option for infrequent drivers.

So what are the benefits?

It’s simple, it’s flexible and it’s easier on your wallet. You’re in the driver’s seat.

It’s cheaper

Compared to our regular comprehensive cover, Pay As You Drive is cheaper because you’re only paying for the kilometres you drive, you’re not paying for all that distance that you’re not driving. That keeps costs down.

It provides flexibility

We know that situations change. Pay As You Drive means you’re not locked into insurance that doesn’t suit the amount you drive. It’s all about what suits you and your wallet.

It puts you in control

By choosing how much you drive, you also get to choose how much you pay for your cover. So you’re in control at every point of the journey.

How does it work?

1

Sign up and pay per 1,000 kilometre

When you sign up for Pay As You Drive under ahm Comprehensive Car Insurance, you can purchase between 1,000 km and 15,000 kilometres of cover per year, depending on how many kilometres you think your car will drive during the period of insurance. Don’t worry, you can top this up if you need to. Just keep in mind that we'll need to adjust your premium, too.

2

Check your odometer and start driving

We'll then ask you for your ‘start’ odometer reading within 14 days of the start date of your policy. Your ‘end’ odometer reading is just your ‘start’ odometer reading plus the number of kilometres you purchased.

3

Get yourself a sweet certificate

We’ll issue a Certificate of Insurance, showing the start odometer reading you gave us, the number of kilometres you’ve chosen to purchase and your expected end odometer reading. Your insurance is valid between these odometer readings.

4

Top up your kilometres

So maybe you want to take a spontaneous road trip to Byron and you’ll probably blow out your estimated kilometres this year. All good. You can top up your kilometres during the term of your cover. Just log in to your car insurance account online to make the change or give us a call on 1300 518 049 and we’ll do it for you. We might need to tweak the premium, but it’s no biggie.

5

Make a claim

Someone bumped your car. Just log in online and fill in all the details. Or give us a buzz. We’ll start the assessment process and get you sorted. You can read more about the assessment process in our Product Disclosure Statement.

6

Keep in mind

It’s always a good idea to check your start and end odometer details that you have provided to us by logging into your account with us online or on the Certificate of Insurance that we issued to you.

If you need to make a claim and your odometer reading at the time of the claim is less than your start odometer reading or greater than your end odometer reading, a $1,000 additional excess will apply.
