Other boring but important stuff

There are a few more things to keep in mind with your private health insurance when you’re thinking of having a baby.
Waiting periods
Waiting periods
Make sure your cover includes pregnancy and birth. There’s a 12-month waiting period that the mother will need to serve before being admitted to hospital for these services. The good news is that you can serve part of this waiting period while you’re pregnant. And if you missed the 12-month waiting period for birth, you can still join extras cover to claim pre- and post-natal services.
Out of pocket costs
Out of pocket costs
Out-of-pocket expenses are any expense for a hospital, medical or extras service or item for which you will not be reimbursed by either us or Medicare. This is an amount you have to pay. The amount we can pay depends on your cover. These are all important things to check when you’re looking at different cover options.
Add your baby to your ahm family membership
Add your baby to your ahm family membership
If you already have a couple, single parent family or family cover when your baby is born, all you need to do is add them to your membership by calling us on 1300 507 818. If you want the baby to be included on your membership from their date of birth, then you need to do this within 12 months of their date of birth. The baby will only need to serve any waiting periods that have not already been served by the Principal Member. If you’re on a single cover, then you’ll need to change to a family (or single parent) cover, and add your baby to the membership by calling us on that same number. The request must be made within 2 months of the baby’s date of birth. And remember that any changes in your premium amount (your regular insurance payments) will apply from the baby’s date of birth.
